How You Know You Have Lice

Man: The Book of Stars / masters of surf

The Book of Stars is the trilogy that made its author famous among amateur teen fantasy, his first attempt.

On some classical, maybe a little too much, it falls somewhere between sets Ewilan and Tara Duncan (lower than the first and second), plowing the same field of play is

easy to read, neither too long nor too short, no downtime, there are not too many characters and their names are easily memorized.

fishing but it just lack of originality and humor.

be found magic with rituals, incantations and complicated postures, and the hero is obviously a young wizard learning, there are pretty imaginary maps of the island of Ys inhabited by the heroes, and a map of where they spend uncertain world through the magic to risk their young lives and save their world.
There are the usual bunch of teenagers, boys and girls who discover the power of friendship in adversity, the joys and sorrows of romantic inclinations, and testing weld them while making them grow.

There is an absolute evil, as usual, who will lose in the end. Chic.

As I pointed out my oldest son, there is an ellipsis at the end of the last volume and it bothers him of not knowing what will happen to the hero as adults, although one suspects that Guillemot will become the greatest wizard of his time, his friend the greatest knight, etc.

With this diptych the author this time eyeing the side of the space opera in the background and Jules Verne or Stevenson for the atmosphere of maritime adventures.
As in Treasure Island is one of the wicked cook on a ship, and there are countless metaphors recalling stories navigators of the nineteenth century, storms, breakers, wrecked ships, collision, confrontation of hostile fleets.

one side so the good guys, from a cold planet, with a good head for the northern and western habits and appropriate values (democracy, free enterprise very capitalist and non-existent army, made when necessary of all brave captains independent account that the Empire).
the other hand, the bad, from a desert planet and burning, not a very good head of oriental style Huns, including militarism and the spirit of conquest partner, the more hierarchical any anti-democratic, with big heads and associated shamans for worse.

The wicked are hatching a diabolical plan to multiple drawers, as cunning and skilful, polish up and started two decades earlier, and that will first appear to trap the unwary nice, before completely screwed up by the fault a famous captain in the old style of a very old ship full of surprises, and especially three or four teenagers: a sorceress apprentice, an apprentice from the High, an apprentice chef from the lower classes, and the second volume it will add a nasty cousin of the young nobleman and a sorceress girlfriend obstinate of the first.
Trainees ...
saving an empire, defeated a fleet or organize resistance as in 1940, but the scale of a planet.
as eldest son is currently in the third for 3 days (training) but probably with less risk and glory to the key.

But if you forget the implausibility usual books for young teens when 12 years old roles more usually vested in Rambo or Superman, we are facing a very pleasant and captivating story, and definitely more original than the trilogy above. But it was probably less successful because surfing less about fashion fantasy Harry Pottérien.
